- Neriman, who received oud training in the Turkish style section of Darülelhan (Conservatory), has been living in the Fatih district since the age of fifteen with her father, Faiz Bey, who loves Eastern culture, to which she is proud to belong. He has been engaged to Şinasi, whom he met in this district, who is very similar to his father and who studied kemenche in Darülelhan, for seven years. The whole neighborhood expects this engagement relationship, which pushes the limits of tolerance, to end with marriage. However, Macit, whom Neriman met in Darülelhan, arouses her desire to live a Western life that has a place in her. Neriman, envious of the sparkling lifestyle in Beyoğlu and Harbiye, begins to hate the environment she lives in, their homes, her father, Şinasi and even her cat, whom she thinks represents the east. Fatih and Harbiye, two districts connected to each other by tram but incompatible with each other, are the fronts of a cultural and mental tension in the same geography. Peyami Safa, the most productive pen of Turkish literature, mirrors the pains of assimilation (contemporaryization) experienced by our society through objects, individuals, institutions and places in his novel Fatih-Harbiye, which is also the subject of television series.
