- 1914. The Ottoman Empire had just emerged from the Balkan and Tripoli wars. Two young officers of the Ottoman army are thinking about the failures in these wars. First, Nuri Conker brings up the problems and solution suggestions in his book Officer and Commander. His friend and colleague Mustafa Kemal writes Hasbihal with the Officer and Commander as soon as he reads this book.One of the main themes of these two books, which complement and reinforce each other, is good management. Both point to the command levels as the real solution to the failure of the army. He defends the importance and necessity of both scientific knowledge and many individual qualities for soldiers, especially courage and decision-making on its own.However, when the Ottoman Empire soon entered the First World War, Mustafa Kemal had to postpone publishing his book. On the other hand, the two friends prove that what they wrote in their books in Anafartalar and Chunuk Bair in Çanakkale is not just words. His troops emerge from difficult battles with great success.Mustafa Kemal published his book only at the end of 1918, in Istanbul, where he returned from the armistice. About six months after the publication of the book, he went to Anatolia and cut off his relations with Istanbul. Damat Ferit Government, whose name is mentioned together with the armistice and occupation, also had the book collected and destroyed.After its first edition, Officer and Commander and Hasbihal was published in 1956 by Hasan Ali Yücel as the first book of İş Bankası Kültür Yayınları. In this new edition, prepared on the occasion of the 125th anniversary of Atatürk's birth, Atatürk and Conker's books come together. Moreover, original and simplified texts are together on opposite pages for the first time.He was overshadowed by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk's writing, military service and statesmanship. However, Mustafa Kemal wrote and translated professional booklets while he was still graduating from the Military Academy. During his time as a statesman, in addition to his Speech, he wrote the books Civics and Geometry and wrote some sections of history textbooks.Nuri Conker (1881-1937) was Atatürk's neighborhood, school, professional and comrade-in-arms. They were together in Tripoli, Çanakkale and the War of Independence. The only book he wrote, Officer and Commander, was instrumental in Mustafa Kemal writing Hasbihal.
