- Broke Lovers is a sharp social critique novel that takes an x-ray of 1950s Turkey, centering on Yeniyetme Sur's relationship with her family and girlfriend Norma. Zaven Biberyan, who draws attention to the tensions hanging in the air while revealing the contradictions and conflicts that caused Sur, a senior high school student, to be filled with a sense of rebellion against his parents, then the Istanbul Armenian community and finally everything around him, after September 6-7 and May 27. It is as if he was wandering around the nerve end of Turkish society before the military coup. Sur, whose father of provincial origin and mother from Istanbul, who has finally gained a position in the Armenian community after years of effort, is deeply disgusted by their world of values, conservatism and bourgeois lifestyle, and who is under pressure from his family because his girlfriend is an older and working woman, is surrounded by the wall he has built around him with his youthful trust crises and masculinity. It is roasted in an increasingly intense spiral of anger. While stepping into the streets of Penniless Lovers, sometimes Islands, sometimes Eminönü and sometimes Şişli, where a now-historical Istanbul lurks in the background, it focuses on the constantly aching traces of the traumas transferred from the past to the future around the story of a family. This striking novel of Zaven Biberyan, whose name is now considered one of the most important Armenian writers of the 20th century and has a loyal readership with his works translated into Turkish, is published with the presentation of philosopher Marc Nichanian, known in our country for his book 'Literature and Disaster'.
