The base is weighted to make it stable so that it doesn't tip over easily. However, one customer reported that the on and off switch was not working properly. Additionally, the lamp does not come with a bulb and one customer reported incorrectly believing that it was battery powered. Overall, it is well reviewed as being a good desk lamp, perfect for studying or close-up work in a small defined area.
