Blu-ray Editorial Review
Straight Time (blu-ray) is a remarkable crime drama that delves deep into the psyche of its protagonist, Max Dembo, portrayed by Dustin Hoffman in a stunningly introspective performance. The film, directed by Ulu Grosbard, eschews traditional glamorization of criminal life, presenting a stark, realistic portrayal of despair and choices in 1970s Los Angeles, captured beautifully by cinematographer Owen Roizman. Unlike typical crime flicks, it strips down the narrative to focus on character over action, immersing viewers in the raw emotions and gritty settings that define Dembo's turbulent journey. This film is an unflinching study of a man fighting his own demons, yearning for redemption yet inevitably drawn back to a life of crime, offering an unvarnished look at the cycle of criminality and the societal forces that entrap individuals—making it a must-watch for fans of genuine cinema.
