The Sandman: Dream Hunters (Prose Version) is a novella with accompanying illustrations, and a standalone retelling of an old Asian fairy tale of love, vengeance, and spiritual magic by Neil Gaiman, with illustrations by Yoshitaka Amano. It captures Dream's trademark twinkle, making it a powerful story about Morpheus and his fatal hubris, guiding two potential lovers, a fox-spirit and a monk, to care for one another despite their doomed situation. The illustrations by Yoshitaka Amano, combine traditional Japanese watercolor with a modern illustrative style. The story is inspired by Pu Songling of the Qing Dynasty, making it a lovely fable about life, love, and death. It is also an excellent starting point for those new to the Sandman series. The Dream Hunters is a perfect collaboration between Neil Gaiman and Yoshitaka Amano, and it will carry the reader gently into a story that is old and as old as time.
