Fire Emblem Fates is a turn-based strategy game with multiple routes based on your choosing. The Hoshido route follows a more traditional Fire Emblem game style with easier objectives, weaker enemies and provides an opportunity for grinding, whereas the Nohr route is more challenging with unique and complex chapter objectives and stronger enemies. Grinding is not allowed, and the game has no room for mistakes. The game can be quite hard and requires innovation from the player. One thing to take note of is that the NA version has all skinship content cut out (as decided by Nintendo) making it different from the Japanese version. There is no dual audio option in any version. The player has to choose the Conquest (Nohr) path, and if they decide to get the other paths, they will have to pay $20 each. The game has received mixed responses. The challenging gameplay, music, and overall game experience have been praised. However, the decision to split one game into multiple paths has been criticized, with some finding the game shorter than its predecessor Fire Emblem: Awakening. Lack of variety in the story and manual add to the list of complaints.
